On the second Thursday of each month, PT SLUG holds its general meeting. Each meeting features a guest speaker, who offers interesting information on Macintosh or related topics. Mac Programs SIGMac Programs SIG

Our Mac Programs SIG (special interest group) which meets on the third Friday at the WSU computer lab, covers programs that come free with the Mac, such as Address Book, Preview, iCal, iPhoto, iTunes, Stickies, TextEdit, Widgets, and many more. Photoshop SIGDigital Media SIG

Our Digital Media SIG is focused on mainly on photography related programs. In this SIG we cover photo enhancement and effects with a number of programs including iPhoto and Photoshop Elements along with elements of digital photography. Other media editing programs like iMovie will get coverage, too. The SIG meets monthly on the fourth Friday at the WSU computer lab. New Macs with OS 10.5 come loaded with applications and utilities, as many as 35 software applications and 25 utilities and older Macs have almost as many. But what are all those programs, which ones might be useful and which can I ignore? The handouts lists the Apple software programs and has a brief description of them. Title: Smart Folders, Albums, Playlists and Address Book groups
Terminology: Spotlight Window, Spotlight Menu, Search Criteria, Sidebar
The January Mac Programs workshop was about making and using smart folders, what they are and how to use them. These Mac features are found as Smart Mailboxes in Mail, Smart Albums in iPhoto, Smart Playlists in iTunes and Smart Folders made from Spotlight searches. There are even Smart Groups in Address Book. These are self-updatng folders that perform a continual search for the criteria you specify.

January 2009 PTSLUG Monthly Meeting Presentation Handout
"Back to Basics" In the January general meeting we looked at a number of basic OS X operations and programs that all Mac users, both new and more experienced, might want to know. Some of the ideas covered include taking images off the web, when and how you should you repair permissions and verify the hard drive, setting your printer to do draft copies (saves ink), using tabs in your web browsers, using and making aliases and temporary folders, why you should add another administrator account in the System Preferences, and much more.

Secrets of the Mac Part 6, tips and tricks on word processing and printing. What many of us do with our Macs most of the time is some form of word processing and printing. The workshop and handout covered writing shortcuts, text editing, fonts, making PDFs, information about available word processors (both the pay variety and some that are free) and dealing with printing problems. This workshop was a continuation of the workshop series which began in July 2007.
